TGD, or Third Hour of the Day, is one of the most famous and longest-running bands in Poland performing music with a Christian message.
Who are TGD?
The group was formed in 1982 as a nationwide, almost 100-person youth choir, which was the result of the merger of several church vocal groups. The founder and first conductor of the choir was Janusz Sierla. Their innovative approach to music – both in terms of repertoire and accompanying instrumentarium – broke stereotypes concerning Christian music in Poland, causing controversy.
Over the years, the composition of the band and its form evolved, with about 500 people passing through the choir. TGD won a wide audience and inspired numerous music groups. Today, many Christian communities throughout the country make psalms and songs from their repertoire.
TGD's work fits into the pop-gospel trend, but is not a simple mapping of African American style. The music of the band is the result of drawing from various inspirations and searching for their own artistic identity. TGD currently creates a choir of several people, instrumental ensemble and soloists, and conductor Piotr Nazaruk is responsible for the compositions.
TGD is not only a music band, but also a community of people of different Christian denominations. Their concerts are primarily a prayer expressed in sounds, consistent with the idea of Gospel – which is not only a musical genre, but also a Good Nowinya about Jesus.
